Social Media Marketing

It is no surprise that the top companies using social media can be found on Facebook and Twitter. Facebook and Twitter are both powerhouses in the social media game. These social media sites are an easy way for companies to interact with their customers, allowing them to connect to millions of people online. Some companies are using social media as one of their main marketing strategies. Starbucks and Target are two fortune 500 companies that frequently use social media to market to their audiences.

With over 30 million followers on Facebook and over 11 million on Twitter, Starbucks knows how to reach out to their customers. They use these platforms to let those express their experiences at a location, advertise the latest specials, all while keeping a consistent online presence to keep customers coming back.

Facebook gives them opportunities to see what people like or dislike about their products. People can now give more than just a thumbs up whenever they see a post of something they have tried or that is new. With adding hearts and faces that tell whether your happy, sad, shocked, or even mad, Starbucks uses Facebook's emoticons as a way to see whats trending. Starbucks also uses their Facebook to post videos and photos of their products that follow with the season, tips of what drinks and food items go well together and tips about the drinks. For instance, they post about hot drinks during cold weather(Fall & Winter Season) and iced drinks in warm weather(Spring & Summer Season). They are able to post these with not just pictures but a story with them. They can catch your eye while scrolling through your news feed with colors that pop and catchy names for the drinks like "Macchiato Mondays".

Drinking coffee in itself is a social activity, people who shop at Starbucks tend to be more socially engaged online and in person. Starbucks creates a social environment in store where people come together for study groups, business meetings, and family outings. Starbucks uses this to their advantage by encouraging online feedback through social media all while in store.

With almost 2 million followers on Twitter and 23 million on Facebook Target makes an effort to reach out to their customers while also being open and available to them. Although 2 million might not seem accurate for a big company like Target, not only do they have a main page for the store but they have a variety of different accounts for their consumers. Target has made it their objective to help their customers reach out to them. These Twitter accounts allow Target to zone in on a specific audience that they are trying to reach.

Target has also taken this approach on Facebook. These multiple accounts/pages helps them to respond quickly to their customers questions and needs. This also helps alleviate the problem of unwanted content that can ultimately lead to an unfollowing. Target's multiple account strategy allows consumers to choose which aspect of the company they want to experience.

  1. I enjoy how Starbucks makes suggestions on their Facebook page about food and drink combinations. An excellent way to give customers tips and introduce them to a whole new way of indulging the products.
